The Hour of Truth | One-act Play | Percival Wilde | Dramatisation


The Play, 'The Hour of Truth', is written by Percival Wilde. The play is taken from 'A Question of Morality and Other Plays'. The Characters are Robert Baldwin, Martha, John, Evie, Mr.Marshall and a maid. The play is an intense psychological study of the corrupting influence of money on people. The plot of the play explores greed from diverse angles. Although all individuals are tempted by money at one point or other in life, this one act play particularly shows how easily people forget their moral values and principles when they are tempted by money. But at the end of the play the reader realizes that money only brings with it isolation, punishment, deception, frustration and endless shame.

SRG English, GMHSS Perinthalmanna has enacted the play for the benefit of the students. The scene is set at Baldwin's cottage and it is Sunday afternoon. Robert Baldwin has gone outside. His wife and children are anxiously waiting for his arrival...

Amigo Brothers (Piri Thomas) | Animation | Part 1 and 2

 

 

          ‘Amigo Brothers’ written by Piri Thomas tells the story of two seventeen year old friends – Antonio Cruz and Felix Vargas - who are trying to qualify for the Golden Gloves Championship tournament. They are born and brought up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the United States. The two boys have grown up together and are such great friends that they feel like brothers. (The Spanish word ‘amigo’ means friend).

        Antonio and Felix are skilled, enthusiastic and intensely passionate boxers. Antonio was fair, lean and lanky, while Felix was dark, short and husky. One day, Antonio and Felix learn that they are set to fight each other in an elimination bout that will determine which of them goes on to compete in the Golden Gloves—the first step towards a real professional fighting career. Since they have to fight it out among themselves to fulfil their dream of one day becoming the Light Weight Champion of the world, now they are facing one of the biggest challenges of their life. They have to select between their friendship and competition – two themes of the story ‘Amigo Brothers’ and decide which is more important to them.
         

What happens when they have to face each other in one of the 

biggest challenges of their life?

         Before going to that let’s see how they lived together as two amigos in the same neighbourhood, who live and breathe the sport of boxing. They train together whenever they can and share an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport and its stars. Their passion for boxing is a positive element of their lives that has kept them away from gangs and drugs, which are prevalent in their New York City neighbourhood. 

        Let’s see an animation about their lives and the events that happened before the Division Finals in this first part of our video lesson on ‘Amigo Brothers’.

         Now, let's see the second part of the story.

The two face internal conflicts about the value of friendship as they prepare for the physical conflict. Though they have always been trained together, in the days leading up their bout the boys decide to separate till the day of their fight. They agree to treat each other like typical opponents in the ring, and they vow that, whatever happens, their friendship will remain intact.

On the appointed day, both fighters come out swinging. Both of them were so popular in their neighbourhood that the morning of the fight, Tompkins Square was a beehive of activity. As the two climbed into the ring the crowd exploded with a roar. Match started. They fought toe-to-toe. At the end of the final round, the boys were fighting so intensely that they did not hear the bell, and the referee and the two trainers pried them apart.

How to prepare a character sketch - Nomita (Matchbox)


A 'short story' is a prose narrative "requiring from half an hour to one or two hours in its perusal." (Edgar Allen Poe). Plot, character, dialogue, time and place of action, style and stated or implied philosophy of life are the chief elements of any prose fiction. Even though, the brevity is the most important characteristic of the short story, still there is scope for characterization, and development of the plot at least in the limited sense of the term. Plot and character are the two important elements of a short story. The plot is the arrangement of the events in the story. What about the character? 3Ls of Empowerment (Paragraph 6,7&8)



Christine Lagarde speaks of 3Ls - learning, labour and leadership - as the three essential factors for women empowerment. The third 'L' is the Leadership. Leadership enables women to rise and fulfill their innate abilities and talents. Here there is plenty of room for improvement. Women should be ready to ‘dare the difference’ by coming out of their comfort zones.

The third "L" is leadership that enables women to rise and fulfil
their innate abilities and talents. Here, there is plenty of room for
improvement. The irony is that when women lead they tend to do as
good a job as others, if not abetter job. They are more likely to make
decisions based on consensus-building, inclusion, compassion and with
a focus on long-term sustainability. It is true that women sometimes
lack the confidence to match their competence. But they need to
change that mindset and reset the narrative in their favour. So it is
essential that women be ready to "dare the difference" -- to take risks
and step outside their comfort zones. Nonetheless, even those with the
drive to succeed continue to face barriers: whether we are talking
about providing primary education for girls in a village, or executive
positions for women in business.
It is time to create a world where all women can meet their
potential without impediment or prejudice and the world will reap the
benefits. The three Ls will help us get there.
If we dare the difference, the difference will deliver.

Labour facilitates women to flourish and achieve their true potential. It helps women to become independent, bold and resourceful. Labour helps women to progress in life... First about learning: Education is the foundation upon which any
change is built. Learning helps women to help themselves and break the
shackles of exclusion. Nowhere is this more essential than in the
developing world. There is an African adage that goes: "If you
educate a boy, you train a man. If you educate a girl, you train a village."

If learning is just the first step,labour is the second. Labour
facilitates women to flourish and achieve their true potential. But
at present, when women participate in the workforce, they
too often tend to get stuck in low-paying, low-status and low-security
jobs. Globally, women earn only three-quarters as much as men --even
with the same level of education and in the same occupation. Surely,
one of our most basic norms should be “equal pay for equal work!”
Recent researches show that eliminating gender gaps in economic
par􀀁cipa􀀁on can bring an increase in per capita income.

We can undoubtedly promote more opportunity for women in
the workplace. It is all about changing laws; for example, by ensuring
that property and inheritance laws do not discriminate against women.
It also means policies that encourage education and healthcare.
Moreover, we need to provide greater access to credit so that
women can achieve greater economic independence. So, learning
and labour are key factors.

It is great to be among friends and kindred spirits.
The 21st century poses many challenges that require new ways
of thinking, none more important than the economic role of
women in a rapidly changing world. But women today remain
blocked from contributing their true potential. This has a huge
cost. In some countries, per capita income lag significantly
because women are denied equal opportunity. They represent
half the world's population, but contribute far less than 50 per
cent of economic activity. What is needed to change this picture is
a concerted effort to open the door to opportunity with what I call
the "3 Ls" of women's empowerment: learning, labour and leadership.

As all of you know, the Covid 19 pandemic has necessitated online classes for the time being.

We would like to make use of this platform for the discussion of Plus Two English topics along with the online classes available through KITE Victers. The Subject Resource Group (English) have decided to prepare some audio/video lessons for the effective transaction of English lessons and the same will be made available to the students through various online platforms. This blog is an endeavor in this regard.
This will be an extension of our discussion started through Whatapp groups.
